Dandruff is normally considered as a skin problem where in the skin cells grow and die off quickly leading to dandruff.It is a problem which if neglected can get various severe damaging your hairs adversely. Dandruff is also a major cause of various other skin problems such as pimples and acne. Thus proper and medication is very important to prevent it. We are all aware of the fact that a person's entire body surface continuously sheds dead skin cells in every 24 days approximately. Natural dandruff can result of the normal growing process of the skin cells of the scalp. The dandruff scale appears to be small, round, white-to-gray patches in between the hairs. Scaling that is produced by dandruff can occur anywhere on the scalp, in the hair, on the eyebrows, the beard and even it can spread to the neck and shoulders. Since dandruff is a natural process, it cannot be eliminated but be managed and controlled. Role of Citric acid in dandruff: Citric acid is a weak natured organic acid and is commonly found in citrus. Citric acid acts as natural and is also used to add an acidic or sour taste to foods and soft drinks. A natural existance of citric acid can be found in a lot of fruits and vegetables. However it is most concentrated in lemons and limes, where it can comprise as much as 8% of the dry weight of the fruit. At room temperature citric acid appears in the form of white crystalline powder. It can exist in water free form or may contain one water molecule in its molecule. The chemical properties of citric acid resembles a lot to other carboxylic acids. Upon haeting beyond the temperature 175 celcius citric acid decomposes through the loss of carbon di oxide and water. Citric acid for dandruff treatment and removal: Citric acid can be used effectively in the treatment of for diseases characterized by defective keratinization including dandruff. For this reason citric acid is widely used in the cosmetic industry especially in hair care products and shampoos as an antidandruff agent. Generally the citric acid, which is, used in hair care products and shampoos are derived by fermentation of crude sugars. Citric acid is known to have antioxidant and toning properties and also it perfectly balances the acid-alkali levels. Most part of the citric acid that is used as an antidandruff agent belongs to the group of alpha hydroxy acid.
